The other side of augmented reality systems

Augmented reality has got many features but like any technology, it has the other side. Consider the challenges facing the AR industry.

Augmented reality (AR) technology does not create a comprehensive artificial environment around us, unlike its virtual reality counterpart. It subtly takes links and objects from the real world to create additional layers above them and completely combine the real and virtual worlds. However, despite all the remarkable advantages of AR, there are some problems that negatively affect the mass implementation of this technology:

Confidentiality and safety

One of the disadvantages of augmented reality is that it is based on the collection, analysis and dissemination of various kinds of data. In particular, the dissemination of information occurs through the use of big data, which raises concerns about privacy and security. For example, some augmented reality devices record the environment in real time. A record can create potential legal problems.

Some augmented reality systems also collect and analyze biometric data and user device history. Due to strict data protection laws, developers of these systems must comply with data usage standards.

The lack of standards for AR technologies turns design and development into simple experiments that developers rely on. Basically, the trial and error method is adapted to achieve the desired results. In these cases, the slightest negligence can lead to a serious problem of user privacy. Developers struggle to cope with the idea and constantly make the necessary changes depending on the situation.

Implementation and cost

The development and implementation of the AR system is an expensive and technologically complex process. Of course, there are several options for implementing augmented reality, and its values are different. Setting up an app can cost several thousand dollars. And if a company needs a special application created from scratch and with unique components, then the price can exceed the six-digit range. Thus, in a business environment, small organizations may be disadvantaged due to lack of resources for the implementation of augmented reality.

Also AR demands new technologies and models. Are necessary to smartphones in powerful computing opportunities that applications of augmented reality worked smoothly. Development of AR also depends on development of artificial intelligence, in particular its some forms, such as machine learning, natural language processing and computer sight.

Hardware issues

Now each available headset of augmented reality is the bulky hardware which can be too expensive to broad masses. Besides, the majority of AR headsets needs to be tied to the computer that does all process limited and inconvenient. As an alternative users can use the smartphones or tablets for the AR applications. However mobile AR faces serious problems in exact display of visual effects. For example, electric hindrances which are usually observed in urban areas can influence mobile sensors. Besides, cameras of smartphones are intended for capture 2D - images and aren't capable to display 3D - images. Therefore, the hardware necessary for AR technology, it is necessary to improve before mass introduction.

Poor content and use cases

Much of the AR-related content is mostly a showcase of simple stunts and nothing more. Its aim is to present some brands as visionary and cunning. Therefore, there is no trust in augmented reality technology and its use options.

One of the reasons for this problem is the lack of experience in this area. There are not enough developers who are well experienced in AR technology and can provide an accessible and rewarding experience.

Augmented reality as envisioned is an additional element to other types of activity – it has to promote process, assist in performance of specific actions or to be convenient in providing additional information.

Physical security risks

AR erases a side between the real and digital world. Therefore, one more lack of augmented reality is connected with possible dangers which proceed from modification of reality. For example, many people were traumatized during the game in Pokemon Go.

Imposing of digital elements on the environment masks real dangers and does users by less careful. That is applications of augmented reality can lead to serious injuries if they are used in potentially dangerous conditions, such as roads with heavy traffic, building sites and medical institutions. That is why producers of cars so reluctantly introduce AR displays.

Summing up, we can say that with the modernization of technology, the lives of people and organizations are simplified. So augmented reality is an advanced system for learning new things, interacting with different people and places.

However, when used improperly, the result can be bad, as evidenced by the growing health problems and psychological problems in the current generation. Nevertheless, this technology is not something that everyone can afford, but someday it will become available to ordinary people. Despite its cost, with more productive use, this technology can lead to a better future.
